The Knox Public Health works with local agencies to develop a plan that will allow us to be prepared for any emergency or threat to our community. The Knox County plan addresses a variety of health threats and the procedures necessary to maintain efficient public health services for our citizens including: Reporting infectious diseases and other public health emergencies, Developed plans for mass immunization or antibiotic distribution in order to ensure the safety of the residents, Coordinated smallpox vaccination to smallpox response teams made up of public health and healthcare personnel. Trained staff on crucial topics including, computer technology, Incident Command System, Epidemiology, and Weapons of Mass Destruction, Exercised emergency plans with local and regional partners.
Provides coordination of an integrated emergency management system with local officials, emergency response organizations, support services, and volunteers. In the aftermath of disasters the county EMA supports local response efforts and coordinates disaster recovery operations from the county Emergency Operations Center. Also coordinates and supports efforts to train and exercise with local officials, emergency responders, community service organizations, business and industry executives and citizens.

The Emergency Preparedness unit is responsible for the Mercer County Health District's emergency preparedness activities, and coordinates with local and state agencies, including the Medical Reserve Corps, in the planning and response to emergencies. The Licking County Health Department works closely with other agencies to prepare for, and respond to emergencies that threaten the public's health. LCHD staff participate in state and local emergency planning committees including: Licking County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), Central Ohio Regional Public Health Planning Committee, Medical Reserve Corps and the Central Ohio Regional Medial Response System. We also test our emergency response plans annually. We have participated in Local, Multi-County, and Regional exercises covering chemical attacks, bio-terrorism, and disease outbreaks.

Provides specialized services to the community during and after disasters (floods, blizzards, earthquakes, tornados) and accidents (fires, chemical spills, broken water or sewer structures). Services include providing information and technical assistance related to water disinfection, contaminated food product, clean-up, temporary handling of human waste and garbage, insect and rodent control, assistance with sources of medical supplies and determining need for inoculations, etc. Provides training on these subjects to municipalities or community groups within the county.
