Assists residents in reducing or eliminating debt, including consumer, medical, utility, and student loans. Also assists with debt collection rights and garnishment matters.
Provides representation to low-income clients by 3rd-year law students, operating under the supervision of faculty. Cases handled include consumer home repair, misdemeanor criminal cases (in select suburban courts see eligibility), benefits advocacy, Social Security Disability appeals, health care issues, guardianship removal, and organizations seeking non-profit status. The clinic CANNOT handle family law cases, health care personal injury or malpractice cases, bankruptcy or felonies, does not help with employment law concerns, and does not assist with expunging of criminal records.

Provides the following legal services for low-income clients with consumer protection and debt collection defense issues: advice on exempt assets and income, non-dischargeable debts and alternatives to bankruptcy, debt collectors and access to credit, fair debt collection, garnishment and liens, denial of credit; and consumer products and services, repossession, rent to own, warranties and contracts, telephone and utility bills, unfair sales practices, home improvement, and challenging credit reports.

Evaluates health care cases related to Medicaid or Medicare (denials, terminations)and delays in processing applications; applicants waiver services (in-home health supports, nursing, or aide services) have been reduced, denied or terminated; overpayments where collection of overpayment creates a risk that other benefits will be taken to collect the overpayment; problems with Medicaid/Medicare for currently or formerly incarcerated individuals.

Provides free legal assistance via phone regarding problems that affect older adults living in Ohio. Subject areas include civil law issues such as consumer problems, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, subsidized housing, wills and estates. If the legal problem cannot be solved over the phone, the client may be referred to a private attorney who can provide the service. Also offers pamphlets on a variety of legal topics.
