Administers examinations to demonstrate competency. Issues, denies, and revokes licenses based upon set standards.

Establishes and maintains standards, registration, practice and professional conduct for physicians (Medical Doctors, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, and Doctors of Podiatric Medicine), acupuncturists, anesthesiologist assistants, dietitians, genetic counselors, massage therapists, physician assistants, radiologist assistants, and respiratory therapists. Enforces the laws and rules governing the practice of medicine in the state of Ohio.

Certifies alcohol and other drug treatment, prevention, and intervention programs in Ohio.

Grants licenses to optometrists, handles renewals, and enforces continuing education. Provides a seminar on the Ohio laws and rules of optometry, a requirement for licensure. Optometrists need to complete 25 hours of continuing education yearly to renew license; preferably October through September of each year.

Enforces cosmetology and barbering industries standards through examinations, routine inspections, investigations, and disciplinary action.
