Coroner's Office investigates the deaths of persons dying from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly, when unattended by a physician for a reasonable period of time, in detention, or in any suspicious or unusual manner. Another reason that a body may be brought to the Coroner's Office is that the identity of the deceased or next of kin is unknown.

Operates funeral services.

Offers financial assistance to help families/friends who have lost a loved one pay for the cremation of the individual's remains.

Presides over the Mayor's office, utilities, Greenlawn Cemetery, Mary Fate Park and local swimming pool.

Provides funds to assist individuals and families pay for funeral and burial expenses.

Conducts investigations, inquests, postmortem examinations, and laboratory tests to determine the cause of death and mode of death in all cases of natural death when the individual was unattended by a physician and in all cases of unnatural death (homicides, suicides, accidents, or deaths of a suspicious nature).

Determines the cause of death and maintains records of those cases reported who have died within the county by natural, criminal or violent means, accident, homicide, suicide, or other suspicious or unusual means. Submits copies of appropriate reports to the Prosecuting Attorney in cases where further investigation into a death is appropriate.

Determines the cause of death of individuals who die within Summit County from apparent criminal acts, violence, accidents, suicide, suddenly when in good health, or in any suspicious or unusual manner.

Determines the cause and manner of death involving those in Allen County who have died suddenly, unexpectedly, violently, or by any suspicious and unusual means as well as those deaths unattended by a physician. Maintains records for said deaths. Some Coroner's records are available to the public.

Provides assistance with food, shelter (rent or mortgage), utility bills (gas and electric), principal car payments, and other needed services for Veterans, active duty military, and dependent survivors. In some cases, may assist with indigent burial. Assistance is in the form of vouchers. Amount of assistance is based on demonstrated need.

Offers financial assistance to defray the funeral expenses for veterans. Will assist up to $1000 plus the cost of setting a government marker.

Educates the public about choosing meaningful, dignified, and affordable funerals and related topics. Provides speakers, printed material, and online information.

Services offered will vary with the cemetery. Provides a headstone or marker to be placed at any cemetery but does not pay for placement of the headstone or marker if not at a national cemetary. VA will pay up to $796 toward burial and funeral expenses for deaths on or after October 1, 2019 (if hospitalized by VA at time of death), or $300 toward burial and funeral expenses (if not hospitalized by VA at time of death), and a $796 plot-interment allowance (if not buried in a national cemetery). Provides United States burial flags and memorial certificates.

Offers Burial expense assistance that is available for low-income and indigent individuals. Funds are managed by Township Trustees.

Provides medical and nursing home assistance and for persons 65+ or any age if legally blind or totally disabled.

This ministry is available through an Aspire Ministries partner church. This ministry will provide care to grieving families in their time of need by providing limited funds for cremation, a pastor will be available for the funeral, funeral home, and graveside service. A funeral dinner may be provided for the family. A referral helps as it will speed up our intake process to make it easier on the family.

Conducts investigations to determine cause and manner of death. Works with law enforcement, collects evidence, and authorizes toxicology tests and autopsies. Testifies in court when needed. Completes death certificate and upon completion of the investigations issues a final report. Is responsible for identification of the deceased and notification of next of kin. Provides information to families and to media. Helps identify threats to the public safety and is involved in public education and in training of public safety forces.

Indigent residents of the City of Newark only. If individual is proven to be indigent and family can be located, they are required to meet with a funeral director for preparation of the deceased before calling Cedar Hill for cremation. If no family can be located, the coroner will contact Cedar Hill to proceed. Cremation services only are provided, along with a basic service, no calling hours, and ashes are buried at Cedar Hill. If family prefers to take ashes home, Cedar Hill will pay only for the cremation. Special circumstances apply to veterans, but must be arranged through VA first.

Assistance may be available for clients who have no resources to pay for burial/cremation and who do not qualify for the Indigent Burial Program through their local municipality.

Provides funeral pre-planning for members. Members can choose between cremation or burial with one of several participating funeral homes in the community. Set costs cover transportation, cremation or burial, and a simple coffin. Does not include burial plot, embalming, gravestone, and any other cemetery or funeral expenses. Must become a member while still living; does not offer funeral planning for those who were not members before death. Does not provide financial assistance for burial or cremation.
