Assist in filing claims for Social Security Survivor cash benefits. Beginning October 2014, our field offices will stop providing benefit verification letters, except in emergency situations. Benefit verifications are available online, and can be obtained anytime by registering for a My Social Security account located at : www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount, or requested through our national toll-free number 1-800-772-1213.
The Social Security system now has a new security feature that started on Monday, August 1, 2016. Any existing account profile, and for anyone attempting to start a new account profile, they will be required to have a text-enabled cell phone.
Each time a user goes to log in to their account, the system will text an authorization code to the cell phone # on file (normal texting rates will apply if such a fee is charged by cell phone service provider). The user will need to enter the authorization code from the text into the login screen before the system will grant access. This process needs to be completed within about a 10 minute time frame or the authorization code expires.
If someone does not have a text enabled cell phone, or does not want to provide the number, that person can no longer use the My Social Security online access.
The local SSA office on Trimble Road can help reset the account if the user has forgotten their login information or if the system has locked the user out for too many failed attempts. The office has three computer kiosks in the lobby if someone wishes to go there for assistance with the process. Customers can walk in during regular business hours or make an appointment.
