Disability Support Service | Sight Center Of Northwest Ohio

1. Information and Referral - The Case Manager provides information to people contacting The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio seeking information for accessing needed vision-related or other community services. 2. Education and In-Service - Group or individual instruction in vision care and services available to address specific needs. 3. The Shop at The Sight Center - Numerous adaptive aids such as talking clocks, writing guides, large print or Braille playing cards, memo recorder/players, magnifiers, CCTV's, etc. are for sale to people in need because of loss of vision. 4. Appliance Safety Marking - A Rehabilitation Teacher puts tactile marks on oven dials, microwave buttons, dryers, etc. to ensure the safety of a person with a visual impairment. 5. Social Services - A Case Manager performs assessments of a consumer's needs and facilitates team conferences and referral source communication. For services that aren't available through The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio, the Case Manager refers to outside community services or links the consumer to another service provider than can assist. 6. Adaptive Computer Technology Services - Consultation, evaluation, and training in the use of non-visual software and hardware options. 7. Vision Rehabilitation Interdisciplinary Assessment and Optical Aid Training - Provides an optometric examination and rehabilitation treatment for low vision (vision loss uncorrected by the use of conventional contact lenses and glasses by an eye care professional referral ONLY). Low vision devices include magnifiers, closed circuit televisions, and proper lighting. 8. Orientation and Mobility Training - Provides consultation, evaluation, and training in safe travel techniques within the person's home and community. 9. Rehabilitation Teaching - Provides consultation, evaluation, and training in the use of adaptive aids and daily living skills (budget/money management, child/dependent care, clothing care, laundry, home maintenance, meal preparation, shopping, cleaning, etc.) 10. Newsline - This is a free program offered by the National Federation of the Blind which allows a print handicapped person to dial a local number and listen to his/her local paper, national papers, and magazines.
