Provides information on identifying, preventing and removing bed bugs. Offers trainings on bed bugs. If a renter has bed bugs, they should notify the landlord immediately. Notification must be in writing, and the tenant must have proof that the landlord or his or her agent received it. If the landlord refuses to hire a licensed exterminator after being notified in writing, contact 311or 645-3111 (for Columbus residents), Worthington Code Enforcement at 614-431-2424 (for Worthington residents) or Franklin County Public Health at 525-3160 (for all other Franklin County residents) to file a complaint. Hocking, Athens, and Perry County residents may be eligible for a one-time heat treatment to exterminate bed bugs from their homes. Households must have one minor child and be at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Reduces the incidence of insects, vermin, and related diseases throughout Richland County by using education, rodenticides, adulticides, and code enforcement. **Note** They DO NOT have funds for bed bug extermination. This office ONLY gives out information on pest control.

Conducts county-wide mosquito control programs which include protection measures, surveillance of dead birds, treatment for mosquito larvae, and information on mosquito-borne diseases. Treats standing water areas and storm water catch basins for mosquito larvae. Conducts mosquito surveillance. Responds to complaints.

Helps to reduce the possibility of disease outbreak through education and information, surveillance, and control of mosquitoes. Conducts exterior inspections of properties with the possibility of baiting and provides homeowner education about ways to protect their homes from rats.

Protects the public from unhealthful or unsanitary environmental conditions by establishing and enforcing health codes and regulations. Responds to public health nuisance complaints. Inspects homes and other properties for compliance with health standards. Initiates litigation against those who have consistently failed to comply with requirements, when needed.

Tracks and investigates any animal bite, from domesticated or wild animals, including 10 day isolation of the animal (if animal is alive), testing of dead animals suspected of carrying rabies, and verification of the animal's vaccination against rabies if applicable. Provides disease prevention practices include the elimination of havens for rodents, baiting for rodents, reduction of standing water for mosquitoes, and treatment for larval and adult mosquitoes.

Surveillance is the cornerstone of the program. Other duties include: education, reduce and eliminate mosquito breeding sites, respond to service requests for mosquito problems, traps and monitors mosquito population to determine when mosquito spraying is needed.

Community Environmental Health promotes and protects the health and safety of residents through preventative health programs: investigates animal bites; inspects jails; inspects RV Parks & Campgrounds; provides mosquito control and education; enforces housing maintenance and occupancy codes; licenses and inspects public swimming pools; licenses and inspects tattoo and body piercing establishments; provides education on diseases and health issues related to ticks. (Residents living in the Cities of Columbus and Worthington are served by Columbus Public Health.)

Assists older adults and disabled adults with bed bug extermination.

**Process can take over 90 days and is dependent on funding, program not appropriate for emergency situations** Provides funding address a variety of high priority housing based health and safety hazards in housing occupied by low- and moderate-income households, especially those with children. Funding is available for owner-occupied homes and residential rental properties. Both single-family and multi-family units (4 or less units) are eligible. Priority is given to homeowners. Includes licensing and inspecting restaurants to help protect the community from food borne illnesses; inspecting schools to help create healthy learning environments;inspecting retail food operations, licensing and inspecting public pools and spas, manufactured home parks, campgrounds, and tattoo establishments; septic system consultations, permits and inspections; water consultations and testing; permits and inspections for plumbing systems and private wells;lead poisoning prevention, rabies quarantine; and solid waste inspection of disposal facilities.

Provides inspection or education on methods of clean-up regarding a variety of health hazards in the home environment. Topics include the hazards of: high grass over 8", trash & debris, stagnant water, insect infestation, lead, illegal dumping reporting in public and privately owned lots, rodent control, (inspector places poison in animal burrows outside the house), mold (especially regarding black mold that grows on water-soaked cardboard and unpainted wood), as well as inspections and licensing of public establishments in order to enforce existing health codes. Inspects tenants' homes for bedbugs and cites landlords but will not inspect homeowners. NOTE: Homeowners who request assistance with rodent control or home sanitation may be cited for corrective action if the health inspector decides the situation warrants.
