Accepts anonymous report information about the activities of people who are illegally disposing of litter, dumping and/or committing an environmental crime.

Provides field inspection, enforcement activities including water testing (when a mining operation is involved), and project oversight. Handles public complaints and other enforcement actions at active mining operations, mining company land reclamation sites, solution mining sites, injection well facilities (also called fracking), and oil and gas drilling and production operations.

Takes reports of spills and environmental emergencies, such as petroleum and chemical spills, fires involving petroleum and accidents causing the release of pollutants to waterways.

Takes reports on emergencies and other sudden public threats such as oil, radioactive, and other hazardous chemical spills as well as railroad incidents and maritime reports of suspicious activity and relays them to the proper authorities for action.

Investigates animal bites, food poisoning outbreaks, complaints of health hazards, and illegal dump sites .

Enforces regulations concerning the collection, storage, transportation, and final disposal of all solid waste and infectious waste.

General inquiries and concerns, or to submit a complaint or report a non-emergency environmental situation. Region 5 covers the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Receives and investigates complaints regarding the health and safety conditions of any public or inspected establishment in jurisdiction.

Accepts report of hazardous spills.

Provides a hotline for reporting unusual and unwanted substances in and around stormwater drains.

Identify any environmental condition or action adversely impacting the health or safety of the public. Protects the public from unhealthful or unsanitary environmental conditions by establishing and enforcing health codes and regulations. Responds to public health nuisance complaints. Inspects homes and other properties for compliance with health standards. Initiates litigation against those who have consistently failed to comply with requirements, when needed.

Investigates reports of health nuisances and determines follow-up actions. Will investigate the following: * Malfunctioning household sewage disposal/treatment devices * Garbage /refuse storage and removal * Public swimming pools, bathing places, camps, parks trailer parks, and other places of public gathering * Private water supply systems * Abandoned wells and cisterns Does not enforce any building or housing maintenance code. For those issues, call city/village offices or Wayne County Building Department.

Takes reports and investigates public complaints of unlawful spills and dumping of hazardous waste and other materials into storm sewers, waterways, and soil within the county. Does not handle airborne emissions (see EPA).

Handles reports of environmental emergencies involving the releases of oil, hazardous chemicals, or radioactive materials into the air, land or water. Examples may include chemical spills on highways and in waterways as well as toxic emissions from industry or other environmental crimes/violations. Provides an emergency response team that offers coordination and technical assistance for hazardous material containment. Works in conjunction with the federal environmental protection agency to ensure investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites.

The goal of Washington County Local Emergency Planning Committee is to save lives and protect property by developing programs and procedures for emergency operation capabilities that mitigate the effects of, prepare for, respond to, and recover from planned or unplanned chemical releases.
