Duties include inspection and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities, distribution and collection systems, testing and sampling at different points of the treatment process, and responding to customer complaints about water outages, sewer back-ups, etc. In case of basement flooding, will send an inspector to the site to determine if blockage or break is in the main sewer line (for example, the storm sewer in the street) or on private property (from the curb to the house). Can only address issues with publicly owned sewer line. The sewer line from the curb to the house is the homeowners' responsibility. Will give the property owner advice on what is needed to remedy the problem.

Provides fire department and EMS ambulance transport. Will come out and check homes for carbon monoxide gas. Does not provide detectors, but will install a homeowner's unit free of charge. Administers the Senior Citizen Smoke Detector Program, installing a free, new smoke detector for seniors age 62 and older. Will also return to replace batteries and make sure all detectors are working. Non-emergency activities include fire safety demonstrations and fire code inspections of public buildings. Also provides green reflective house number signs, free of charge, to all Springfield Township/Ontario residents.
