Licenses restaurants, retail food establishments, mobile and temporary food vendors, and vending machines which dispense perishable items, and conducts periodic inspections of these facilities. Assists those who are planning to open businesses of these types in applying for the proper licensing. Responds to consumer complaints about these establishments. Reports and investigates food-borne illnesses. Answers questions about food recalls.

Investigates animal bites in accordance with state law. Upon receipt of an animal bite report the animal must undergo a ten day quarantine period, either on the premises of the owner or at a pound or kennel. The animal cannot be released without proper rabies vaccination. The bite victim will be notified of the results of the quarantine findings and advised on any further action necessary.

All animal bites (or exposures which draw blood) must be reported to the health department and investigation is required. The owner of the animal is notified of quarantine requirements. A veterinarian must examine the animal after the quarantine to verify the animal's good health and update its rabies vaccination. Tracks and investigates any animal bite, from domesticated or wild animals, including 10 day isolation of the animal (if animal is alive), testing of dead animals suspected of carrying rabies, and verification of the animal's vaccination against rabies if applicable. Provides disease prevention practices include the elimination of havens for rodents, baiting for rodents, reduction of standing water for mosquitoes, and treatment for larval and adult mosquitoes.

The Communicable Disease Reporting Program monitors the occurrence of contagious illnesses within Montgomery County. The program staff gathers reports of diseases in the community, interviews people with disease, and conducts follow-up investigations to determine the source of infection. Also provides information on and serves to control and prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as STD's, Tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
