Provides legal services for low-income victims of domestic violence. Services include divorce issues for recent victims of domestic violence. Will also assist in filing for those who are seeking a Civil Protection Order (CPO). Some cases are handled by staff attorneys and some are referred to volunteer lawyers who have agreed to provide free services.

Provides free, civil legal services to those in need in eight counties throughout central northeast Ohio. Offer screening for those seeking legal assistance; legal information, advice and representation for qualifying clients; community education on legal issues; public advocacy and awareness of the needs of low-income individuals and families; continuing legal education workshops and training; partnership with and training for community organizations.

Provides culturally specific and trauma informed services to individuals experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking with a focus on the immigrant and refugee communities. Advocacy and legal services are available. Advocates may be able to help with crisis and long-term safety planning, counseling referrals, financial planning, support and referrals to shelter, case management, filing for a Civil Protection Order (CPO) and other services. Attorneys are available when applicable to meet with clients to discuss any legal concerns. If qualified, attorneys can help with a divorce, CPO representation, Marsy's Law, immigration, custody, etc. Program approach is assigning one advocate and one attorney to prevent the survivor from having to relive their trauma over and over again by telling multiple people the same story. Program also offers support groups for different ethnic communities and education/outreach to community members, service providers, and others. Service is not for those in immediate emergencies.

Provides 24/7 support to survivors of sexual violence. Offers accompaniment while receiving medical treatment and/or legal services. Provides emotional support and crisis intervention at any stage of recovery. Assists in obtaining protection/restraining orders.

Provides 24/7 shelter and crisis hotline, legal advocacy, support groups for women, individual supportive services for victims and children. Offers education, prevention programs, and works with law enforcement and courts. Webchat services also available to those in need at www.rc.chat/sps.

Provides support for victims of sexual violence which may include crisis intervention, emotional support, assistance with applications such as address protection, information on legal rights, navigating the medical and criminal justice systems, and accompaniment services.

Victims’ rights advocates provides support to assist in navigating the court and legal system. Services may include making referrals, emotional support, accompanying victims to court and legal appointments, and helping with filing claims such as protection orders, address protection, or victim compensation claims applications.

Helps victims of domestic abuse obtain a temporary restraining order. Intent of the temporary restraining order is to prevent harassment, stalking or violence on the part of the abusive individual until the court can set a hearing to review the evidence and determine what permanent relief is appropriate. Offers additional assistance for battered women or men who are initiating a divorce.

Assists domestic violence victims in obtaining temporary protective orders. The victim must appear at the initial appearance of the defendant to discuss this order with the judge. NOTE: Does not issue peace bonds or restraining orders.

Evaluates cases for possible assistance with a Civil Protection Order (CPO)where one of the following is true: an incident of abuse toward applicant or minor child has occurred in last 60 days; abuser is subject to charges or protection order for offense of violence in last 60 days or a Civil Protection Order (CPO) has been issued against abuser; abuser is incarcerated for offense of violence, has made new threats of abuse to applicant and incarceration will end in less than 12 months; juvenile court custody matter where unmarried biological mother is seeking custody or incident of abuse towards minor child was alleged but not substantiated, or applicant is concerned about complying with court-ordered custody or visitation due to Covid 19.

Assists with short term crisis intervention and/or makes appropriate referrals for victims of crimes and their families regarding the recovery from the trauma of their crime related experience; assists with referrals for compensation regarding medical bills as related to the crime, if applicable; assists and supports the victim through the legal system/court process. Assists and supports the victim through the post-conviction process of the case. Also assists and offers support to victims of domestic violence during the process of applying for civil protection orders and temporary protection orders, including stalking and sexually-oriented protection orders.

Provides a specialized advocate to assist survivors of domestic violence as they proceed through the criminal justice system. Advocates do not work for the state, the city, the county, or the police department and are therefore not obligated to disclose any information shared by a survivor. Will provide support and accompaniment to meetings and court proceedings.

Offers assistance in dealing with the justice system to victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault or related crimes. Acts as intake for all restraining orders in Portage County. Will help the victim fill out and file any necessary paperwork and will accompany the victim to all legal proceedings.
