Provides information and training to residents regarding landlord/tenant concerns and fair housing laws which prohibit discrimination because of race, color, religion, nationality, sex, handicap, family status, or military status.
Information line for tenants regarding their rights and responsibilities. This is an information line only, and those with legal questions may be referred to Legal Aid's intake or a neighborhood legal advice clinic.

Some examples of common questions are:
  • Am I allowed to break my lease
  • How can I get my landlord to make repairs
  • What do I need to do to get back my security deposit
  • Can I keep my service animal if my new building does not allow pets
  • Do I have to keep paying rent if my landlord is not paying utilities that are his responsibility
  • I received a 3- day notice, do I need to move
  • How much can my landlord charge for late fees
COVID-19 Temporary Message: All Legal Aid walk-in intake has been suspended until further notice. Community based legal clinics are also canceled through April. People are encouraged to do over the phone and online intakes at this time.
Evaluates cases related to problems with public and subsidized housing (Section 8, Housing Choice Voucher Program, buildings administered by the federal housing agency, and others) including: evictions; termination from subsidized housing programs; rent related matters or issues involving tenant groups, denial of applications for subsidized housing that are based on prior criminal history or a criminal background check; and claims for money damages related to tenancy.

211 Lead Agencies
Conflict intervention services including mediation, conflict coaching, conflict management training, facilitation, workplace/organization team development services. The Mediation Response Unit (MRU) can provide an immediate response for non-violent 911 conflict-based calls. These services are provided as an alternative to costly litigation, use of violence to address unresolved issues, and to prevent homelessness due to eviction. Services also include "re-entry mediation" for those preparing to leave jail/prison.

General Legal Aid
Assists families who are behind in their rent or mortgage to remain in their homes and regain financial stability, as well as security deposit assistance for families in transition. Services vary based on the needs of the individual family, but can include mediation and rent/mortgage payment negotiation with landlord/lender, help accessing utility payment assistance programs, and financial counseling. Up to $1500 in assistance may be available. Support for school-aged children in the household may include access to low-cost computers (funding for computers is currently out). Will also assist with property tax payment to remain in their homes and regain financial stability.

Assists residents with housing issues through the following: * Fair Housing Project - Operates the Fair Housing Hotline in Trumbull County (call HelpLine to connect) and makes referrals to the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. Educates public officials, landlords, realtors, government, social service agencies, and the general public about fair housing laws. * Homeownership Project - Assists homeowners facing foreclosure with improving their financial situation and asserting rights in foreclosure proceedings. * Neighborhood Law Project - Promotes economic development in historically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Provides legal advocacy and supports grassroots efforts focused on social justice and racial equity. * Tenant Assistance Project - Assists low-income renters with maintaining their home, improving living conditions, and asserting rights in eviction proceedings. Also provides advocacy around right-to-counsel in eviction cases and sealing of past eviction cases.

Permits a tenant with complaints regarding housing conditions to deposit rent due into an escrow account until the dispute between the landlord and tenant is resolved. Most rent escrow disputes are automatically referred to the Dispute Resolution Program.
Provides mediation and conflict resolution to tenants who are having a conflict or other issues with their landlord. Will help the client understand their rights as a tenant and advise on how to resolve the situation.
