Presides over Common Pleas Court #1 for Richland County. Hears cases that are felony criminal and civil case over $3000.
Handles arraignments, pretrial hearings, and hearings and trials of misdemeanor, traffic, and violation offenses. Also handles felony arraignments and preiliminary (probable cause) hearings.

In some states a distinction is made between municipal criminal courts which handle infractions, misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for felony cases; and superior criminal courts which try felony cases and misdemeanor cases for which other provisions have not been made.
