Attempts to prevent mortgage foreclosure by providing counseling for those experiencing the first signs of financial difficulty (fear of missing a mortgage payment, one, two or more missed mortgage payments). Will assess the client's financial situation, offer help with budgeting, set up a plan, and make the initial call to the mortgage holder to determine a workable solution. Does not provide funds to clear up delinquency or foreclosure.

Provides guidance and advice to assist families and individuals meet the responsibilities of homeownership and modify or refinance their loans to avoid unreasonably high interest rates, unaffordable repayment terms, and other conditions that can result in a loss of equity, increased debt, default and eventually foreclosure. Counselors also assist homeowners with inquiries related to mortgage scams and reporting instances of potential mortgage scams victimization.

Assists residents with housing issues through the following: * Homeownership Project - Assists homeowners facing foreclosure with improving their financial situation and asserting rights in foreclosure proceedings. * Neighborhood Law Project - Promotes economic development in historically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Provides legal advocacy and supports grassroots efforts focused on social justice and racial equity. * Tenant Assistance Project - Assists low-income renters with maintaining their home, improving living conditions, and asserting rights in eviction proceedings. Also provides advocacy around right-to-counsel in eviction cases and sealing of past eviction cases.

This toll-free hotline will connect callers to a nonprofit counselor who will provide telephone-based budget counseling assistance, customer triage and negotiation with lenders, when appropriate. If more assistance is needed, callers will be referred to a local nonprofit organization whose employees are certified to provide intensive financial counseling and direct consumers to local services and resources, including possible assistance through the Ohio Home Rescue Fund.
