Provides monthly cash benefits to disabled or blind persons who meet minimum length of employment requirements (or whose spouse or parents meet requirement). Benefit amount is based on worker's earnings history. Those who receive SSDI for 24 months are eligible for Medicare. SSDI recipients with limited income and assets may also qualify for SSI benefits.

Individual Social Security offices are responsible for applicants who live within their service area, and all services are carried out at the local level.
