Legal Services For Domestic Violence Issues | Community Legal Aid Services

Helps victims of domestic abuse obtain a temporary restraining order. Intent of the temporary restraining order is to prevent harassment, stalking or violence on the part of the abusive individual until the court can set a hearing to review the evidence and determine what permanent relief is appropriate. Offers additional assistance for battered women or men who are initiating a divorce.

Application process

- If you are in immediate danger due to domestic violence, call your local police department or dial 9-1-1. - Call the Legal HelpLine or visit website for more information or to apply for assistance. - If completing online application, applicants must provide a valid phone number where they can be reached. Applicants will be informed about the status of their application and next steps. - Prospective clients go through a brief eligibility screening process. If eligible, clients are scheduled to speak with an attorney who will discuss their problem with them. - Cases needing more than telephone consultation are served at local offices according to case acceptance criteria.

Fee

Legal services for restraining orders have no fee but there may be court costs. A reduced fee divorce program is available for $250. Other fees such as court costs and litigation expenses may apply.

Eligibility

- Serves residents of Columbiana, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Trumbull and Wayne counties. - Gross household income must be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines OR must be an older adult age 60 or over. - Case acceptance is based on a variety of criteria including case type, level of service required, goal of representation, merit and availability of staff. Other criteria may apply based on the details of the case. - Even if a caller does not qualify for agency services, Community Legal Aid is often able to refer callers to another appropriate program.
