Eligibility

No restrictions. Agency does not handle disputed errors on credit reports.

Required documents

None, however will be required to give full name, current address, birthdate and social security number in order to receive service. Information is kept confidential and print out information will only contain last 4 digits of social security number if requested.

Hours

24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. May request an online report once a week. By mail, a paper copy, once every 12 months.

Application process

Visit website anytime to request a credit report. May also phone to have a credit report sent by mail, may take up to 15 days.

Fees

Free for a credit report (does not include your credit score, a three-digit grade based on your report). Credit scores can be obtained at a fixed cost from each of the three credit reporting companies. Additionally, there may be a charge to place or lift a "freeze" (lock up credit report and scores).

Description

Provides a centralized service for individuals to request credit reports (also called a credit file disclosure). Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act) individuals can request and obtain a free credit report from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Upon request, a "fraud alert" can be placed in your file to let potential creditors and others know that you have been a victim of identity theft. Also, upon request may "freeze" credit report and scores, but will have to request to lift the freeze before doing business that requires a credit check.
