Local offices are open to the public M-F: 9:00am-4:00pm. The 800 number operates live M-F: 8:00am-7:00pm and with recorded information after hours. Many questions can be answered using this option. Information is available at website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and some actions can be carried out there (not enrollment).

Application process
Newly eligible persons receiving Social Security should automatically receive an Enrollment Package approximately 3 months before their 65th birthday, or after their 24th month of disability. Those not receiving any Social Security benefits must contact their Social Security office to schedule an eligibility interview. The packet will include a Medicare card, and will assume that the client wants to enroll in both Part A and Part B. Part B is voluntary, and if it is not desired the card should be returned and the program declined; then a card for Part A only will be issued and mailed. If assistance is desired, or a packet is not received, clients can call to schedule an appointment (either for on-site or on the telephone) or walk-in for service. Clients are encouraged to seek service at site which is responsible for their Zip Code, but this is not mandatory. Fee
Medicare Part A is covered by Medicare taxes already paid; COVERAGE is free to qualified clients (this does not mean that CARE is entirely free). Medicare Part B has a monthly premium, which can be deducted from Social Security, Railroad Retirement or Civil Service Retirement checks.
Eligibility
Medicare serves those age 65 or older, or disabled people from age 18-64, who have worked under the Social Security system or are dependents of someone who has. Persons who qualify under Social Security Disability (SSD) are automatically eligible for Medicare Part A (hospital) after 2 years of disability payments, or if they have ALS or chronic severe kidney disease, and can also opt to enroll in Medicare Part D for prescriptions.
