Eligibility
Serves eligible veterans and their survivors. Income must fall within program guidelines (very low income - slightly above 100% of the federal poverty limit - but phone for details). Must be age 65 or older or have a disability that VA evaluates as permanent and total. SURVIVORS BENEFITS: Income eligible surviving spouses and minor children (under age 18), and certain helpless adult children of the deceased veteran. In some cases, parents of veterans who died because of service connected causes and possibly non-service connected causes are eligible for survivor's benefits. The VA urges all veterans to apply to determine basic eligibility. A veteran includes any person who served in active military service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable as well as active duty veterans and reservists/national guardsmen called to active duty who completed their entire period of duty. The level of benefits granted will depend on when the Veteran served and the nature and duration of their service. Veterans who need more assistance with determining their eligibility for these services should look into agencies and programs that offer Benefits Assistance (search term: Benefits Assistance*Veterans).
