Financial Assistance | United Way Services Of Geauga County
Works with a variety of churches and organizations to provide temporary emergency financial aid for residents of Geauga County. Provides assistance with past due rent and mobile home lot payments (does not help with current month's rent). Also assists with utility bill payments (water, gas, electric), fuel oil, and propane. Will help with purchasing wood for heating. Does not help with phone bills. Provides gasoline vouchers for medical appointments or job interviews. Funds are limited and subject to availability and the amount of assistance provided may vary depending on what funds the agency has and the client’s situation. In all cases, agency will check to see if the client is eligible for assistance through other programs or agencies first. Payments are made directly to the vendor (not the client). In some situations, client may need to provide a co-payment for the service needed.

Application process
Must have first contacted Geauga County Job and Family Services (GCJFS) for assistance. If assistance cannot be acquired from GCJFS, then phone for information or service M-F: 8:00am-4:30pm. If no answer, leave a message with name and phone number. In most cases, agency will return the call within two business days (return calls will be from a 216 area code). Clients should make sure that their voice mail is activated on their phones so that the agency can leave a message if needed. Agency will attempt to call the client back at least two-three times. Depending on what is needed, it may take two to five days for assistance to be granted.

Eligibility
Serves residents of Geauga County or those who will be residing in Geauga County. Individuals seeking assistance must first have applied with Geauga County Job and Family Services (GCJFS) before contacting United Way. Households may only receive assistance ONCE in a 12-month period. For back rent/lot payment - must be 30 days late and in threat of eviction and must pay the current month's rent in full. For utility assistance - must have disconnect notice. In all cases, the amount granted must be enough to remedy the situation (for example, if rent assistance is needed, client must be able to make ongoing rent payments after assistance is received). Vouchers for gasoline are only for medical appointments and employment related transportation. Typically, assistance is once per year however, there may be times where the agency may be able to help with additional resources, if needed.
