Assistance From Medical Equipment Suppliers - Information Only | Durable Medical Supplies
This is not a service of any particular agency. This has been added in order to provide information on how customers may request help from their home medical equipment or home care provider. If a customer is unable to pay for necessary items due to low-income or financial hardship, most medical equipment suppliers provide a process for reducing costs on durable medical items and supplies. This may help with equipment such as: oxygen tanks, wheelchairs, commodes, lifts, hospital beds, medical monitoring equipment, adult diapers, etc. In most cases, the supplier will first attempt to match the client with existing programs or benefits. If the client is already covered by some type of benefit or program, supplier will see if there is a way to have the items covered under the plan. If the client is found to be ineligible for any existing benefits or programs, but meet certain criteria (which varies from company-to-company), all or part of the customer's debt may be forgiven or a lower cost may be negotiated. Does not help with syringes.

Application process
First, client should see if they are eligible for any kind of voucher or waiver program (Medicaid, Medicare, and some private insurance may cover the cost of some supplies). If client deals directly with the company that provides equipment or supplies, they should contact that company to request Hardship or Indigency Forms. If the equipment or supplies are delivered to home through an in-home care provider, client should contact their in-home care provider. In all cases, the company will first attempt to match the client with any existing programs or benefits that may help pay for the equipment. The company will then mail forms to the client that must be filled out and returned. Company may first make collection attempts before any debt forgiveness or price reduction is granted.
Fee
In some cases, client will have a co-pay based on income and assets. Any forgiven costs or debts will be reported as income for the client and may affect current benefits programs that they are on. Some suppliers will offer sales discounts which are not reported as income.
Eligibility
Generally, serves those with low-income or facing financial hardship. Must not have any type of health coverage that would pay for the items and equipment needed. Limits on income, amount of assets, and other eligibility factors will vary by supplier.
