Maintains official records of federal court proceedings, including bankruptcy, civil, criminal, and U.S. Court of Appeals case filings. Records for cases filed after 1991 are maintained by the Dayton office; records for cases filed before 1991 are maintained by the Chicago office.

Provides comprehensive records management support and archival services to the federal government. Provides for the economic storage and services of noncurrent (no longer required for business) records and makes records available to the general public on request. Services include establishing, maintaining, and operating records centers for federal agencies, (includes military service records, military medical records, and civilian personnel records for federal employees), an American history and government library information center, copies of original document records and a variety of services to assist in research and records management.
