Widow/widower who is at least age 60 (or at least age 50 & disabled) or any age if caring for worker's child under age 16 or disabled. Worker's child who is under 18, age 18-19 but in elementary or high school, age 18 or older and disabled before age 22. Parents of workers may be eligible if worker provide more than 50% of their support. Divorced spouses who are at least age 60 years old (or 50 if disabled) and have been married to worker for at least 10 years; any age if caring for a worker's child; not entitled to their own SS benefit that is equal or greater than worker's benefit; not be currently married, unless married after age 60 (after age 50 if disabled).
Local offices are open to the public M-F: 9:00am-4:00pm. The 800 number operates live M-F: 8:00am-7:00pm and with recorded information after hours. Many questions can be answered using this option.

May also phone to schedule an office appointment, which reduces waiting time compared to walk in service (Before someone makes an appointment they should call first, to see if the matter can be handled over the phone and to ensure the office is open to the public.)

Description

Provides monthly cash benefits to the spouse, divorced spouse, child or dependent parent of a eligible worker who died. Benefits are typically 75-100% of the worker's benefit. Some beneficiaries may also qualify for one-time payment after death.

Individual Social Security offices are responsible for applicants who live within their service area, and all services are carried out at the local level. Clients are encouraged to go to the office which serves their Zip Code, though this is not mandatory.
