Peer support is a recovery-oriented intervention in which individuals with lived experience of mental health conditions, substance use disorders, trauma, or other life challenges provide emotional, informational, social, and practical support to peers experiencing similar circumstances. Peer support services are grounded in the principles of mutuality, empowerment, self-determination, hope, and shared experiential knowledge.
