A household may be eligible for SSVF if they are part of a Veteran family, meet income guidelines, and have a qualifying housing need. The household must include either a Veteran or a family member where the head of household or spouse is a Veteran. The household income must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income. The household must also be either currently housed but at risk of becoming literally homeless without assistance, currently literally homeless and at risk of remaining homeless without assistance, or literally homeless after leaving permanent housing within the past 90 days to seek housing that better meets the household’s needs and preferences. For SSVF purposes, a Veteran is someone who served in active military, naval, air, or reserve service, regardless of length of service, and was discharged or released from service. National Guard service may qualify if the individual was activated. Individuals with a dishonorable discharge are not eligible. A bad conduct discharge from a General Court-Martial is not eligible, while a bad conduct discharge from a Special Court-Martial may be eligible.

SSVF does require documentation, but a household does not need to have everything in hand to get started. We are able to begin the screening and, in many cases, enrollment using available information such as a VA verification (SQUARES) and self-declaration for things like income or housing situation. The goal is to get Veterans connected to help quickly, not delay services because paperwork is missing. As the case moves forward, additional documentation will be needed to fully determine eligibility and provide financial assistance. This typically includes proof of Veteran status (if not already verified), identification for household members, Social Security numbers, income verification (such as pay stubs, benefits letters, or employer statements), and housing-related documents like a lease, eviction notice, or documentation of homelessness. If a Veteran or household is missing documents, our team works directly with them to obtain what is needed. This may include helping request replacement IDs, benefit letters, or other records. Documentation is gathered in stages based on urgency, so the most critical needs—like stabilizing housing—are addressed first, while supporting the household in completing the remaining requirements.
