Take Flight | Pegasus Farm

Provides opportunities for individuals with any of a wide range of disabilities to relate to, handle, groom and ride horses as a part of a well-rounded horsemanship experience. Equestrian therapy provides an experience with horses that fosters growth, communication skills, self-esteem, self-awareness, emotional control and self-discipline. It also provides physical benefits such as improved balance, eye-hand coordination, muscle strength, decreased spasticity of muscles, and improved sensory integration. Programs include the Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship Program that teaches the rider the skills and techniques required to ride a horse as independently as possible; Therapeutic Driving, a therapeutic driving experience through the use of a horse-drawn carriage. With the assistance of a certified driving instructor, individuals with disabilities can enjoy the exercise and sense of accomplishment associated with driving the carriage across the Pegasus Farm grounds. The Unified Vaulting Program offers educational, social, creative and movement opportunities for a varied population. Equestrian vaulting is a unique and growing sport which combines dance and gymnastics on a moving horse. Participants develop balance, flexibility, and coordination while learning teamwork and leadership skills. The program is described as “unified” because it includes both Pegasus students, volunteers and youth from the community.
