Application process

SAMPLE BALLOTS and information about voting and extended hours during election periods are available on website. Other services available by walking in with appropriate documents M-F: 8:00am-4:00pm, either before Election Day or on Election Day, at assigned precinct to vote. TO REGISTER TO VOTE: Call or walk in to request or to fill out a registration form or to get a list of sites to register. May also download a form online and mail it in to the county board of elections. Registration forms must be received or postmarked 30 days before an election in order for an individual to be eligible to vote in any election. May also register to vote online at the website olvr.ohiosos.gov with an Ohio driver's license or state ID. TO VOTE BY MAIL OR ABSENTEE: Must apply in writing to vote absentee in each election. To vote by mail, registered individuals may request ballots after January 1st of each year. Call to have a ballot request form mailed or visit website to download a form and request a ballot application by mail to the county board of election. Members of the U.S. armed forces or organized state militia may request mail-in ballots by fax but they must fax the requests by 8:30pm on the Tuesday before the election. Voting for military and citizens living abroad begins 45 days before primary and general elections. Voting for all other voters begins 29 days before an election. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by the U.S. postal service the Monday before election day and must be received within 4 days of election day. Ballots returned from outside of the United States must also be received by the county board of elections no later than the 4th day after the election. Mailed-in ballots in their sealed envelopes may be dropped off at the Board of Elections as well as mailed and must be received by 7:30pm on election day.

Eligibility

Registering to vote: must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Darke County for at least 30 days by the date of the election. Must be at least 18 years old on or before the day of the general election. If individual will be 18 on or before the general election, may vote in the primary election for candidates but cannot vote on issues until they turn 18. Those who have moved since the last time they voted need to re-register at their new address. Must not be incarcerated (in prison or jail) for a felony conviction under the laws of this state, another state, or the United States. If incarcerated for a misdemeanor, may register and vote. If individual is an ex-offender with a felony conviction, must register to vote upon release from prison, even if registered prior to imprisonment. Must not have been declared incompetent for voting purposes by probate court and must have not been permanently disenfranchised for violations of the election laws. College students living in Ohio may register to vote using whichever address the student considers his or her permanent residence at the time of voting. In order to vote in an upcoming election, the voter registration form must be postmarked 30 days before the election.
