Eligibility

Screening for eligibility conducted by United Way of Greater Stark County.

Required documents

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Car title or registration in the client's name.
  • Proof of automobile insurance.
  • Income verification for all household members age 18 and over.
  • Proof of employment or pre-employment training directly leading to employment.
  • Social Security cards or letters from Social Security with the Social Security numbers for all household members.
  • Three (3) repair estimates from ASE Certified Mechanic (estimates must be for identical repair). If car is non-working, take first mechanic's estimate to two (2) other mechanics and ask them to use the same parts and provide their own estimate for the same work.

Hours

Application Process:
  • Application processing takes approximately two (2) weeks.
  • The client is then informed whether their application is approved, pending or denied by Stark County Department of Job and Family Services.
If application is approved then the client has 30 days to complete the following:
  • Set up an appointment and bring all of their documents to the appointment where they are reviewed.
  • The lowest priced ASE-certified mechanic's shop is called and the client's vehicle is scheduled for repairs and the client gets their car to the shop to be fixed.
  • If the process goes beyond 30 days the client must start the process over again by calling 2-1-1.
Other Application Information:
  • Individuals who receive this service can re-apply every two (2) years after receiving the service.

Provides an auto repair program for low-income individuals and families. Covers repairs of mechanical failures and does not cover replacement of tires, auto body work or general maintenance. Offers up to $1,500 for repairs. If the estimate is higher the applicant must pay the difference plus tax.
